About this Event
Discover wildlife that calls Wisconsin's Northwoods home through Wildlife Wednesdays at Treehaven! Join us monthly for this FREE all-ages program series, and explore the natural history of each month's focus animal through interactive activities, guided walks, and/or specimen observation. From fur to feathers, woods to water, predator to prey, and more, experience the diversity of the animal world right outside our windows—and learn how you can help protect it!
Say the word "wasp", and most people will imagine a nest of angry black-and-yellow insects chasing after and stinging them. But did you know this description doesn't apply to all—or even most—wasps? Join us for a walk into the world of wasps, where we will search for a variety of different wasps who can show us how one size doesn't fit all! From parasitoid wasps who lay their eggs on or inside prey, to mud daubers that construct provisioned homes for their young, to gall wasps that develop inside the tissue of plants, there's more to explore than meets the eye. (Quite literally, as some wasps are so tiny you might not even notice them!) You'll discover how wasps provide ecosystem benefits like phenomenal pest control, pollination, and more, and learn how we can help support their important roles. Even though many wasps are solitary and harmless, we won't leave out the "classic" social wasps, and will discuss ways we can coexist while still reducing the fear and danger they cause!
Meet in the main parking lot. Program will not be stationary, but total distance walked will be a half mile or less with frequent stops near seating areas as we explore building exteriors and surrounding vegetation for wasps (mostly parasitoids—we won't get too close to any social wasps!). All ages welcome, but children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
Registration will remain open through the start of the event. Please reserve a spot for each attendee.
