About this Event
Wilderness Union, Toronto's outdoor adventure crew, is hosting a day of free events across the city to celebrate the launch of our new free, . Join us for and learn why adventure is closer than you think.
Most outdoor emergencies aren't dramatic. They're a twisted ankle two hours from the trailhead, a deep cut from a careless knife slip, a member who's quietly slipping into hypothermia and hasn't said anything. Knowing what to do in the first ten minutes matters more than almost anything else you carry.
Join Sarah Flaherty, anesthesiology resident physician and Wilderness Union guide, for a 45-minute precautionary first aid session designed for the lay rescuer. This isn't a certification course. It's the practical foundation we want every member of our community to have before they head into the woods.
You'll learn:
- How to plan and prepare so most emergencies never happen in the first place
- What actually belongs in a first aid kit (and what doesn't)
- How to respond to common Ontario hazards: cuts, sprains, hypothermia, heat illness, ticks, allergic reactions and more
- Self-evacuation principles: when to walk out, when to stay put, and when to call for help
The session is part of our partnership launch with Fjällräven Toronto. Members of the community are welcome to enjoy a 25% in-store discount that evening (a bump up from our standard 20% partner perk), with snacks and drinks on hand.
No prior medical training required. Suitable for anyone who hikes, paddles, camps, or otherwise spends time away from a hospital.
