COURSE INFORMATION


WILDERNESS FIRST AID (WFA)

Learn practical skills to assess a patient, provide basic treatment,

and manage injuries or illness until professional help arrives.

16 hours, delivered over 2 days


Who is this course for?

Beginners and experienced outdoors people. No medical background required.

For Everyone: Anyone responsible for a group outdoors. Families and caregivers.

Dog owners. Gardeners and yard crews. People who work outdoors. Beach, lake, and

river users. Walkers, runners, cyclists. Day hikers and weekend hikers. Backpackers

and thru hikers. Outdoor educators, teachers, and field trip leaders. Search and

rescue volunteers. Park staff, trail crews, conservation crews. Guides and trip leaders.

Club leaders and expedition groups. Skiers, snowboarders, snowshoers. Paddlers,

boaters, anglers, surfers. Climbers and mountain bikers. Hunters and campers.

Camp staff, counselors, and directors. Rural travelers. Anyone who spends time

where EMS response is delayed. Anyone who wants skills when help is not nearby or

not immediate.


Course Outline

● Response and assessment: Standard Precautions. Anatomy of a crisis. Patient

assessment. SOAP notes. Patient lifting and moving. Shock.

● Musculoskeletal injuries: Musculoskeletal system. Sprains, strains, fractures.

Spinal cord injury management.

● Environmental emergencies and survival: The human animal. Hypothermia and

frostbite. Dehydration, heat exhaustion, heat stroke. North American bites and

stings. Lightning. Drowning. Backcountry essentials, bivouac and survival skills.

● Softtissue injuries: Stopping the bleed. Wound cleaning. Bandaging skills.

Infections. Burns.

● Medical emergencies: Changes in level of consciousness. Breathing issues,

asthma, allergic reactions. Chest pain, pulse, heart attack.
