About this Event
Since 1985, the Whiting Awards have been given annually to ten of the most promising emerging writers of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama.
Hear the 2025 winners read from their work the day after they’re announced at an evening hosted by Tony Tulathimutte (Rejection)! Wine and cheese will be served.
The Whiting Foundation hopes to identify exceptional new writers who are just making their mark in the literary culture. Though the writers may not necessarily be young (talent may emerge at any age), the grant ideally offers recipients a first opportunity to devote themselves fully to writing, and the recognition has a significant impact. Whiting winners have gone on to win numerous prestigious awards and fellowships, including the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Obie Award, and MacArthur, Guggenheim, and Lannan fellowships, and their work has shaped and advanced literature in this country over the past three decades.
The Whiting Award winners will be announced at a ceremony the night before the reading. Copies of their books will be available to purchase at McNally Jackson the night of the reading.
Hosted by Tony Tulathimutte. Tulathimutte is the author of Private Citizens and Rejection. A graduate of Stanford University and the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, he’s received a Whiting Award and an O. Henry Award, was longlisted for the National Book Award, and has written for The Paris Review, n+1, the New York Times, Playboy, The Nation, and others. He also runs CRIT, a writing class in Brooklyn.
