Whitechapel Town Centre Management Programme - Black History Series
To celebrate and support Black History Month 2024 - focussing on Reclaiming Narratives, The Whitechapel Town Centre Management Programme is inviting you all to our Black History & Business Excellence event on Thursday 31st October from 11am to 5pm. This is in collaboration with our colleagues from the archives who are doing research around the Tower Hamlets’ Black experience 300 years ago. It will be held in Grocer's Wing 3.
The research is called Communities of Liberation: African peoples in London East End 1567 to 1802. There will be an official launch to this project in February 2025.Come and listen to Genova Messiah and Tony T talk about what this is all about, what great stories they have found so far, and what these mean for the future of preserving and building on the history of African people in the borough. This will take place at 12:30pm.
We will also be speaking with Tricia Blake from Black Excellence CIC who we will be partnering with for our first Black Excellence Business Weekender to talk about her work supporting black owned businesses and what we can expect from the Black Excellence Business Weekender. This will happen at 1pm
Lastly, we will be speaking with one of local black business owners, Renee Bissohong, whose business, The Nubian Princess, continues to grow from strength to strength. She creates black dolls and children's books. This will start at 1:30pm
Also, come along and support our black businesses that are with us for this one day event. They will also feature in our Black Excellence Weekender on the 29 November to the 1 December 2024!
Lunch will be served at 12 noon. We will have delicious Somalian food from our local Al Kahf Restaurant and beautiful vegan food from one of our local businesses, Ethiopic Kitchen. Please register as soon as possible so that we can adequately prepare.
