I was asked to lead a private fossil tour at Whitby, and then the person who'd booked it asked if anyone else might like to join us. So, if you fancy a small-group fossil tour of Early and Middle Jurassic Whitby on the morning of Thursday October 3rd, now's your chance! We'll meet outside the Whitby Jet Heritage Centre on Church Lane, and then walk down onto Tate Hill Sands to get our eye in, picking through the shingle. Most of the pebbles there aren't fossiliferous, but I did find an ichthyosaur bone block there the summer before last, so you never know.
Once we've explored Tate Hill beach, we'll cross the east side of the harbour and head onto the wavecut platform of East Scar, below Whitby Abbey. The rocks there are Early Jurassic, and have many marine fossils for us to admire. Above them in the cliff, Middle Jurassic sandstones often have dinosaur footprints in them. I found some lovely stegosaur prints in a fallen block earlier this year.
Numbers on this trip are strictly limited to 8. The tour will last around 2 hours, finishing on East Scar at low tide (1115am), after which you're welcome to carry on enjoying the geology, or else head back into town. A visit to Natural Wonders or the Whitby Museum is always worthwhile.
The rocks on East Scar can be slippery and seaweed-covered, so footwear with good grip and ankle support is a must. As it's October, warm, waterproof clothing is always advisable. Apart from that, the only thing you might want to bring is a magnifying glass, and perhaps a backpack.
