For almost 100 years, the UW Arboretum has been a part of the Madison landscape. It has always been a place to learn about, and from, the land. In this program, Susan Carpenter, the Arboretum’s Wisconsin Native Plant Garden Curator, will share her expertise and enthusiasm to help us learn more about this valuable resource in our community. This program is free and open to the public.She’ll explore how early ideas and experiments (in the 1930s) about restoring land have evolved to guide current goals and projects. This history informs the Arboretum’s current active ecological restorations in the Grady Tract and the Lost City, and the role of the native plant garden at the Visitor Center. The garden itself – along with statewide outreach – inspires land stewardship at home and in our communities. To illustrate this, spring tips for gardeners who want to grow native plants will be shared.
