What's in My Backpack? Risk Management for Outdoor Adventures

Join us online and in-person while we connect business school concepts with outdoor adventure safety. Raid my backpack to discover the essentials you should always have in your backpack and learn how to handle surprises on the trail. If you're a seasoned explorer, bring a newbie; and, if you're new, come with questions! We'll brainstorm the risks your friends might encounter on an adventure and connect them to the skills and gear you'll want to help stay safe and save lives. I'll also bring my field books.

Agenda

  1. Land acknowledgement, welcome, and group introductions
  2. Risk management framework (Identify, assess, mitigate, monitor & control)
  3. Break-out groups for hazard identification
  4. Risk assessment group activity
  5. Show-and tell of gear for mitigating risks
  6. Working as a team and navigating group dynamics when conditions change
  7. Recommended books, workshops, and skills for further exploration

About the Speaker

Kevin Preston is an experienced local outdoor enthusiast with a penchant for safety and a passion for BC's wild places that comes from lessons learned. Kevin has used his first aid skills in various situations and has had a few close calls. His exposure to outdoor survival started in youth as a cub scout, and he finished all of Scouts Canada's programs offered to youth aged 7 to 21. He also has experience with hunting, using animal intelligence, and foraging for plants and fungi.

Outside of the natural environment, Kevin makes sure that architectural components don't fall off of buildings as a specialty structural engineer, and he's a proud parent and an MBA student at Simon Fraser University. Kevin also dabbles in the arts (yes, all of them) and chronically doesn't have time for any of them.
