About this Event
What the Water Gave Me gathers the works of women and non-binary artists who examine the charged space between empowerment and coercion. Titled after Frida Kahlo’s iconic painting, the exhibition invokes water as a shifting metaphor: both a site of drowning and a space of deliberate submersion.
Across print, painting, sculpture, photography, and mixed media, the works delve into the tension between the pressures imposed by the male gaze and the power wrested back by women and non-binary artists themselves. Within this space, terror and elegance coexist, revealing how reclamation can be both dazzling and disquieting.
The exhibition invites viewers to sit with the uncanny — to recognize how women’s forms have been policed and constrained, yet also to witness the inexhaustible force that pushes back against those boundaries. Like water itself, these works offer both the element of splendor and the pull of the unseen.
