A performance by Issue Box Theatre of "What the Constitution Means to Me" by Heidi Schreck, sponsored by the Steinem Sisters Collection in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
-----
Playwright Heidi Schreck's boundary-breaking play breathes new life into our Constitution and imagines how it will shape the next generation of Americans.
Fifteen-year-old Heidi earned her college tuition by winning Constitutional debate competitions across the United States. In this hilarious, hopeful, and achingly human new play, she resurrects her teenage self in order to trace the profound relationship between four generations of women and the founding document that shaped their lives.
Performed by Rebecca Facey in the role of Heidi, Ryan Randolph in the role of the Legionnaire/Terrie and and Rory Fitzgerald in the role of the Young Debater.
Issue Box is found at the intersection of theatre and social issues, art and activism. It is a community of change agents we call "actorvists". Actorvists believe in the power of theatre arts to educate, celebrate, interrogate, protest, acknowledge, and cajole – to transform and heal, to create space for human dignity.
Issue Box Theatre is an organization committed to making theatre that grows out of the communities it serves. Whether the community is one of location or of identity, such as the LGBTQ+ community, the disability community, or victims of dehumanizing crimes. Issue Box Theatre works with community partners who provide resources that address specific issues. Our mission is to "create space for human dignity, using the arts for social justice."
Our programs and workshops use theatrical elements like storytelling and improv as a catalyst for open discussion. We write and develop original work, as well as devise performances from existing scripts. We're not just putting on a show to entertain, social justice is at the forefront of what we do – and we’re doing it to make a difference.
The Steinem Sisters Collection champions women’s historical, cultural, and political contributions and strives to provide a welcoming space for women from all walks of life to share their truths. It is composed of “feminist materials,” intersectional works that uphold human and women’s rights and interests in defining and promoting political, economic, personal, and social equality of the sexes, races, classes, sexual orientations, and genders. The Steinem Sisters Collection has grown to over 900 titles in the ten years since its inception. Regular programming, including book discussion groups and talking circles, aims to highlight the collection and build community. This collection was made possible due to a generous donation by The Steinem’s Sisters Collective.
“What the Constitution Means to Me” is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc. www.concordtheatricals.com
