About this Event
In the 575th year since the foundation of the University of Glasgow, the Glasgow Open Salon for Arts and Sciences (GOSAS) is bringing together people who are interested in exploring the future role of the university in society.
When: 20 May 2026, 12:30 pm – 2 pm (lunch provided)
Where: Room 639 – James McCune Smith Learning Hub
This event is open to everyone, inside and outside the university, as it aims to stimulate discussion across disciplines and professions. No specialist knowledge is required, only curiosity. The afternoon will run as follows:
- Perspectives: we will briefly introduce a range of views on the role of the university
- “Speed dating”: structured cross-disciplinary conversations to help you get to know people from different backgrounds
- Group discussion: working together to develop a shared vision for the future of the university and the relationship between arts and sciences
The Glasgow Open Salon for Arts and Sciences (GOSAS) is a University of Glasgow Crucible Seed-funded interdisciplinary initiative inspired by the salon culture of the Scottish Enlightenment. In the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, artists, scientists, and philosophers gathered informally to exchange ideas across disciplinary boundaries, creating spaces that fostered intellectual innovation and social progress. In the same spirit, GOSAS creates a space for relaxed and open between conversations staff, students and members of the public across disciplines and professions.
We look forward to welcoming you.
With best wishes,
The GOSAS Team
