Flora MacDonald is often described as a national heroine for helping Bonnie Prince Charlie escape from Scotland, after the defeat of the Jacobites during the Battle of Culloden. However, the story of the rest of her life is equally fascinating – but less well known: Her brief imprisonment in the Tower of London, her involvement in the American War of Independence and even an offer of a pension from the Prince of Wales!
Mrs Margaret Reid, the last private owner of Lauriston castle, gifted the castle and collections to the nation when she died in 1926. An intriguing portrait of Flora MacDonald is included in the vast collection of black and white prints. Linda McDonald is a former teacher and a member of Edinburgh Living History, based in Lauriston Castle. She is also a tour guide in Lauriston Castle.
