Whale Song by Jean-Marie Appriou: Opening Celebration at CWP
We are delighted to invite you to the opening of Jean-Marie Appriou’s Whale Song on Wednesday, September 18th. Consisting of three sculptures, Hommage, A Long Journey, and The Gate of the Whales, Whale Song highlights the history and mythology of whales in this urban space, opening up new perspectives on the future and our relationship to the natural world. Hear from curator Pedro Alonzo and artist Jean-Marie Appriou and stay for tunes and performances. In case of rain, the celebration will be held on Thursday, September 19th.
About Whale Song
These three sculptures, crafted from molded driftwood and old railroad ties and cast in aluminum, beautifully highlight the weathered character of the wood, worn by sun and water.
The sculptures explore the intriguing contrast between the stationary journey of railroad wood and the dynamic journey of driftwood. While wood naturally grows vertically, here its journey is expressed horizontally, forming the foundation of the artworks through themes of horizontality and verticality.
Each piece centers around the theme of the whale, presenting the mythological whale, the historical whale, and the future whale. We are excited to welcome these remarkable sculptures to Central Wharf Park this September.
About the site
Central Wharf Park, located between the New England Aquarium and the Rose Kennedy Greenway, features mature oak trees and provides a perfect setting for this dialogue between nature and culture. The installation will be sited throughout the park, allowing the public to engage with the art in a way that enhances their understanding of urban design and cross-cultural dynamics. Central Wharf Park is adjacent to the New England Aquarium and the Rose Kennedy Greenway Rings Fountain. It is accessible by the MBTA Aquarium Stop on the Blue Line.
