About this Event
Diane Alps is a marine mammal researcher, educator, and long-time whale naturalist with decades of experience working with gray whales. She has spent many seasons in Baja California’s coastal lagoons observing whales during the breeding and calving season and is deeply involved in science-based public education through organizations such as the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, American Cetacean Society and Cascadia Research Collective.
In this opening talk of the Whale Migration Challenge speaker series, Diane will focus on the Baja California leg of the gray whale migration, exploring what happens when gray whales arrive in the warm, shallow lagoons of Baja, how these habitats function as breeding and nursery grounds, and why this phase of the migration is so critical to the whales’ life cycle.
Diane will present the talk remotely via Zoom and Noyo Center team will host and moderate the talk and Q&A session after live from the Field Station.
Happy hour begins at 5 PM and the 45-minute talk starts at 6 PM.
A suggested $10 donation is requested at the door but no one is turned away for lack of funds.
