Highlights include -
Lulworth Cove -
A perfectly circular cove created by waves breaking through a hard rock barrier.
One of the best examples of coastal erosion geology in the world.
The village behind it is a traditional stone-built Dorset settlement.
Hambury Tout -
A viewpoint which gives arguably the best panorama of the entire Jurassic Coast section including both Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove.
Man O War Bay -
Beautiful turquoise water in good weather.
Durdle Door -
The star geological feature is Durdle Door.
A natural limestone arch carved by wave erosion.
The name “Durdle” comes from an Old English word meaning “thirl” (to pierce).
The layers you see here show folded limestone from the Jurassic period.
South West Coast Path Cliffs -
Part of the Jurassic Coast UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The coast records 185 million years of geological history.
Rock layers change dramatically along this section of coast.
Fossils occasionally appear in fallen rocks along the shoreline.
Ringstead Bay -
A remote shingle beach with excellent views east toward Durdle Door.
Historically used for smuggling and small coastal landings.
Weymouth Beach & Georgian Seafront -
Classic Georgian seaside resort architecture along the Esplanade.
King George III popularised sea bathing here in the late 1700s.
The curved bay offers views toward Portland Harbour and Isle of Portland.
Weymouth Harbour & Historic Waterfront -
The harbour dates back to medieval trading days.
The colourful Georgian waterfront houses were historically merchant properties and warehouses.
The harbour bridge still opens for boats moving between the marina and harbour.
Please bring enough food and water to sustain you through this walk. Check the weather and bring appropriate clothing please. If it is sunny bring sun cream and hat etc.
Between Ringstead and Durdle Door the path has several climbs and descents. This 12 mile walk is along undulating coastline with over 2,000ft of ascent.
This is the first of two walks in Dorset this weekend. On the Sunday will be a beautiful 9 mile circular walk in the countryside including the awesome Cerne Abbas Giant, a 180ft (55m) naked, club wielding chalk figure. Weather permitting on the Saturday evening we will try and include a sunset mooch and chill on nearby Maiden Castle, one of the largest and most complex Iron Age hillforts in Europe. Or, we can do sunset on a beach....
