About this Event
Welcome to the DNA Molecular Biology Workshop! Join us at Counter Culture Labs for a hands-on experience learning two fundamental techniques: Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and Gel Electrophoresis.
In this class, participants will make copies of DNA with PCR and separate DNA strands by size using gel electrophoresis. We will also discuss molecular cloning concepts, in particular, how to use plasmids to copy longer strands of DNA with microbial machinery.
Equipment we will use include a Nanodrop to measure the amount of template DNA to be used in PCR, a thermocycler to achieve the appropriate temperatures for each stage of PCR, a gel electrophoresis module to segregate distinct sizes of DNA, and a gel viewer to illuminate DNA bands.
The workshop fee is $200. Venmo @ccl-plantbio. Message the organizer if you need an alternate payment method.(Register more than 5 days in advance for a 10% early-bird discount: $180) This covers instruction and the materials and equipment used in the class.
Required lab attire for safety: Long pants and closed-toed shoes.

About the Instructors
This workshop is taught by David Anderson, Scientist at the Open Insulin Foundation and Lab Manager at Counter Culture Labs. David is an expert in hands-on gel electrophoresis and PCR. He utilizes these molecular biology tools to insert insulin production genes into yeast cells to turn them into insulin bioproduction factories.
This workshop is co-instructed by Anthony Neil Tan, an AgTech professional [UC Berkeley Bioengineering]. He is currently an independent research scientist and his projects center on optimizing the cultivation of high-value plants. His has previous experience developing new plant genetic engineering tools and designing DNA fragments at the U.S. Department of Energy's Joint BioEnergy Institute.
No refunds can be issued. All ticket sales are final.
