However you categorize Grand Rapids, MI’s Metzfire, the original compositions led by guitarists and songwriters Josh Barnaby, Mike Hafer, and Jonas Beel paint haunting and intense atmospheres utilizing subtle electronics and keys from collaborating keyboardist Mike Nolen. The percussion of drummer David Koetje and bassist Mike McNally add intrigue, depth, and formiddable technique to Metzfire’s sound.
Seasoned - having composed together for half a decade together, and several decades collectively in the Grand Rapids, MI rock scene (The Orphan, Kamilla, Johnny Logic, The Storied Life) - allowed for vocalist Johnny Whitney to give voice to the soundscape, ranging from soaring and impressive melodic choices to visceral gutteral growls, laughter, and every possible human emotion between. Metzfire has recently finished recording the follow-up to their 2024 debut album, “Coordinate Oblivion”, aiming to give voice to tragedy - sound to sorrow — Make rhythm from remorse & compress negativity — into a beautiful and intense positive. How pressure makes diamonds, Metzfire’s music is a mechanism to channel anxiety, depression, hurt, and anguish into a beam of sonic energy that can ultimately heal in its collective commiseration.
