The John Woolman Memorial Association will host its annual lecture at Medford Leas.Like many early settlers of New Jersey, some Quakers were slaveholders. This illustrated talk will discuss people and events in West Jersey, how Quaker attitudes about enslavement evolved and influenced others throughout the state. We’ll look at William Penn’s ownership of New Jersey and his enslaved people, the dispute between John Fenwick and Edward Byllinge, and John Woolman’s proselytizing. How the slave market came to Cooper’s Ferry. Lesser known figures—Hugh Huddy, John Rogers, Isaac Budd, John Hugg, William Boen —played important roles too. We’ll look at the Underground Railroad’s William Still, Harriett
Tubman, and Edward Turner.
