This fall, West Akron neighbors will have the chance to come together and help shape the future of their community — one step at a time. Habitat for Humanity of Summit County has received a 2025 AARP Community Challenge grant to host resident-led Walk Audits throughout the West Akron neighborhood.
A Walk Audit is simple: neighbors gather to walk the streets, take notes, and talk about what makes the neighborhood safe, welcoming, and easy to get around — and where improvements are needed. From missing sidewalks to crosswalk safety, lighting, or even spots that feel especially friendly and connected, residents will lead the way in shaping a shared vision for West Akron.
“At Habitat for Humanity of Summit County, we are excited for the opportunity to work with AARP as a 2025 Community Challenge grantee! Working with residents to complete neighborhood assessments, we will build an improved sense of community and quality of life for ALL West Akron neighbors. Known as a “Walk Audit”, the neighborhood assessment will gather information about community infrastructure needs and potential investments. It’s a simple experience/action that can lead to meaningful change just by walking down your own street!
These Walk Audits will give residents a direct voice in how their neighborhood grows and evolves, ensuring it reflects their needs and priorities.” – Arell Tee, Neighborhood Network Manager
The project is supported by AARP through its nationwide Community Challenge grant program, which funds quick-action projects that make communities more livable for people of all ages.
“AARP Ohio is proud to work with communities across the state to help make them more livable for people of all ages,” said Jenny Carlson, state director for AARP Ohio. “Habitat for Humanity of Summit County’s project will bring real improvement to West Akron by improving walkability and helping the area become more age-friendly. We’re excited to see this come to life.”
Residents of all ages are encouraged to take part. No special skills are needed — just bring your perspective, a comfortable pair of shoes, and your ideas for the neighborhood.
Walk Audits will begin on September 27th, through October 11th.
The Walk Audits will begin this Weekend, with opportunities for residents to participate in walking assessments, community discussions, and solution-building sessions. Habitat will host two in-person training sessions on September 27th and October 4th.
