In this special African Dance class, guest instructor Vanessa Gibbs travels from Kansas City to guide us through the foundational movements of Kuku—a high-energy, celebratory dance rooted in community and connection. With decades of experience studying, performing, and teaching West African dance—including training in Senegal—Vanessa brings both depth and authenticity to this experience. You’ll learn the choreography of Kuku while also exploring the cultural context of when and why this dance is performed, deepening your understanding beyond the steps.
Feel the pulse of live drumming by the Rhythm Without Borders Beginning/Intermediate West African Drum Class led by Neil Landau who brings over 30 years of West African drum experience and training by MBemba Bangoura and Michael Markus to support Vanessa. The connection between drummer and dancer creates an electric energy—each beat guiding your body, each movement answering the rhythm.
No experience is needed. Wear comfortable clothing you can move and dance in. A wrap skirt or sarong can be layered over exercise clothing for a splash of color and fun movement.
Space is limited to 20 participants and expected to sell out. Early registration is encouraged.
This is a joyful, immersive experience that invites expression, builds confidence, and connects you to something larger through movement and sound.
