Equal parts tragic and hilarious, Werner Herzog’s portrait of a German busker searching for the American dream stands as one of his most profound works. Hailed by Robert Ebert as “One of the oddest films ever made”, Stroszek stars the enigmatic actor/musician Bruno S. as an alcoholic ex-con who dreams of leaving behind the bleak slums of Berlin. He befriends a like-minded prostitute Eva and they join Bruno’s elderly, eccentric neighbor Scheitz when he leaves Germany to live in Wisconsin. But upon their arrival they find that they’re just as trapped in Dairy Country as they’d been in Germany. (Germany, 1977, 107 mins, German | Dir. Werner Herzog)
