New date - May 8, 2026Welcome to this month's installment of Well-Read + Well-Fed Club, a collaborative series from Reading in Public and the Culinary Annex! RinP picks a cookbook and Culinary Annex crafts a cooking class around it for the community to enjoy!
Join us for the fourth WR + WF Club inspired by the vibrant flavors and traditions of Puerto Rico, guided by recipes from Mia Castro’s new cookbook, Cocina Puerto Rico. Together, we’ll learn foundational techniques of Puerto Rican home cooking—like building a flavorful sofrito, mastering garlic-forward marinades, and working with plantains in both crispy and comforting forms.

Asopao de Gandules con Bolitas de Plátano – a cozy pigeon pea and rice soup with tender plantain dumplings (can be made vegetarian), featuring a traditional sofrito base
Pernil Asado – slow-roasted garlic pork shoulder marinated with adobo mojado, a cornerstone of Puerto Rican seasoning
Tostones or Arañitas – crispy twice-fried plantains or shredded plantain fritters, served with creamy, tangy mayo-ketchup
Also an offer: a thoughtfully-selected fiction and nonfiction book pairing to get in the spirit for this month’s class.
