About this Event
Ory from our Hot Works Shop will lead students through an introduction to the concepts, methods, and practice of welding mild(structural) steel. Students will get exposure to the concepts behind gas welding, plasma and torch cutting, and metal arc welding, and will have hands-on practice with our MiG/Wire Feed welding systems and plasma cutter.
Students should wear close fitting clothing of natural fibers (including shoes) and bring hearing and basic eye protection. Welding hoods and gloves will be available for use.

Lecture: Welding Concepts
Info: Student will get a small text companion to keep with the history and concepts behind welding, metallic arc welding, and cutting. This lecture portion of the evening will focus on understanding the why behind the process and will be held in the Brickyard's classroom multi purpose space.
🕑: 06:30 PM - 07:00 PM
Demo: Welding and Cutting in Practice
Info: Moving to the Hot Works space, Ory will demonstrate plasma cutting of mild steel, followed by a demonstration of the setup and use of wire feed welding, and the creation of the first weld beads. Students will be able to observe directly and ask questions in preparation for hands on time.

Practical: First Sparks, First Beads
Info: Students will get hands on the welding machines and plasma cutter and try their first passes. Skill is NOT expected in this phase, just hands on attempting to establish and maintain a welding bead.

Practical: Fine tuning and practice
Info: Students will return to the welders, can try using different machines, and will fine tune with guidance in pursuit of good weld characteristics.
