Welcome to the Jungle! | Head Hunters and Orangutans of Borneo, Indonesia

Along countless islands of Indonesia lies Borneo, the world's third-largest island. Although divided among three countries - Malaysia and Brunei in the north, and Indonesia to the south - it is completely covered by equatorial rainforest.
The Borneo Indonesian District, Kalimantan, is renowned for its uber rich jungle biodiversity, housing a variety of wildlife including orangutans, proboscis monkeys, and pygmy elephants. The island's rivers wind their way through the jungle, flowing into the sea. Traveling by boat is essential here, but there is something truly magical about this journeying, being completely surrounded by ancient rainforest and breathing in the untouched nature.
The indigenous Dayak people of Kalimantan were once known for their headhunting practices, but those traditions have disappeared with the influence of colonial rule in the 19th century. For thousands of years, they live in harmony with nature. During this trip, we will have the opportunity to connect with them, learning about their diminishing traditions as they adapt to modern life.
Orangutans of Kalimantan - Pongo pygmaeus - are one of the three species of orangutans found in Asia. Their distinctive red-brown fur and long arms allow them to effortlessly swing through the trees and build their nests in the treetops. Locals humorously refer to them as "Dutch Monkeys" due to their pink faces and large noses, resembling colonialists.
Leaving behind all modern comforts, we will board a traditional local boat called Kelotok to navigate along the Sekonyer River and float into the heart of the rainforest. The boat is equipped with basic amenities such as mattresses, mosquito nets, and a simple shower facility. Our journey will take us to the Orangutan Conservation Centre, followed by the Dayak Lopus Village. We will have the opportunity to meet orangutans, go tubing on the river, raft on bamboo, trek through the forests and peat swamps, experience Dayak culture, learn to craft traditional items, cook jungle foods, and even compete in a blowpipe game. You have been warned, welcome to the jungle!
Let’s go!
DAY 1: PANGKALAN BUN – TANJUNG HARAPAN CAMP
Meeting at Jakrata CGK for a domestic flight to Kalimantan. Arrival in Pangakalan Bun, breakfast and transfer to Kumai, where we board our Kelotok and start the floating journey. We will cruise through the Sekonyer River, before making our first stop at Tanjung Harapan Camp to see Orangutans. We will be staying on the top floor of the boat, with bedding being set up after dinner.
DAY 2: CAMP LEAKEY
Todays destination is Camp Leakey, but first lets sneak on Orangutans having their banana breakfast first. After lunch, we will depart from Camp Leakey and spend the remainder of the day hiking through the Borneo rainforest, observing the diverse wildlife within. In the afternoon we head to sneak on nocturnal animals and perhaps some fire flies too!
DAY 3: PESALAT - LOPUS
Cruise down to Pesalat Reforestation for tree planting. We will embark on a short trek to the tree seedling area, to cultivate trees for the Orangutans. Following this educational start of the day, we will resume our cruise to Kumai. From here we trek to Lopus Village for approximately 4 hours. After check-in we will assist traditional dishes preparation. Upon nightfall, we will gather with the locals and enjoy a traditional meal together. The community will also conduct the Ikat Tongang Ceremony.
DAY 4: LOPUS
Today we explore the Dayak culture in depth. We start with Rumah Betang, a traditional Dayak house made with walls of tree bark. We will then witness the process of making tuak, a wine made by fermenting sweet rice with various herbs and spices. We will be taught how to weave rattan and kapuak, an ancient fabric made from tree bark. This process involves peeling the tree, beating and smearing the bark until it is soft enough to be made into a kapuak sheet.
DAY 5: PANGKALAN BUN – HOTEL
Menyumpit - a traditional blowpipe competition run by a village expert who can take more than two shots in a single breath. This will be followed by the local game Balogo, a traditional pastime involving a stick and tree seed.
