This July, mount up and embrace the rich tapestry of diversity and culture of the Inner West at the Newtown Jets annual Welcome Day. Presented in conjunction with long-time collaborators the Music & Booze Co (of the hugely popular Beer Footy and Food Festival), the Jets are rolling out a day at the footy like no other.
Indulge in a feast of spirits and culinary delights; beats supplied by Heaps Gay DJs curated by Kat Dopper - whose parties are safe spaces for the queer community and allies to gather and celebrate without judgement; plus a performance by Newtownβs iconic Welcome Choir, the open, safe, friendly, all-genders, all-ages singing group.
And in the spirit of diversity, acceptance and keeping things a little different, The Jets will once again welcome down the Petersham Rugby Clubs womens and mens sides to open proceedings with a couple of massive local derbies. The women will kick things off, taking on arch rivals the Briars, followed closely by the men clashing with Canterbury RFC, leading up to the main game between the Newtown Jets and the Sydney Roosters.
If having Rugby and Rugby League playing on the same day wasn't enough to keep the traditionals guessing, Welcome Day will be presenting what will be a first in the culinary world of Rugby league, an all vegetarian and vegan food line up! New vegan hotspot Mr Charlies will be slinging vegan burgers and fries alongside vegan players Vege4love, Morleys, Vejoes and White Peal Pizzeria. Also joining this delicious affair are much loved local favourites Yullis and unique cross-cultural taste haven Tokyo Taco. Lastly but definitely not least, the countryβs only Kombucha Ice cream van, Mr Booch will be parked up on the hill dishing out the tastiest ice cream to ever be served at a game of footy.
While the plates are full, the drinks will be flowing. Find Inner West favourite, Philter supplying the best of brews, while distillers Brix Rum, Fellr, Poor Toms, Lily fields Gin, Goodradigbee Distillers and Archie Rose will give punters the opportunity to wet their whistle. And if that doesnβt get you excited, there are still more distillers yet to be announced.
To ensure the party's energy stays high, Kat Dopper continues her partnership with Welcome Day following the electrifying lineup of performers in 2023. Unleash your inner dance floor diva as this year's event bursts with the vibrant energy and colour of DJs and Frou Frou (decorations) by Heaps Gay, known for their larger-than-life parties that has coaxed Sydney out of its shell since 2013. And with the Welcome Choir's triumphant return, get set for spontaneous sing-alongs to Aussie classics and pub anthems as the games unfold.
Tickets are set at $22 for adults and $10 for kids. And for those families who want to bring littles ones along, kids under 12 can enjoy free entry, ensuring that all steps of life, no matter how big or small, can enjoy this truly unique Inner West spectacle.
Get immersed in the best of the diverse culture Newtown has to offer.
