The Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design is pleased to present exhibitions for the Fall semester 2022. All gallery programs are free and open to the public.
Two summer exhibitions overlap the beginning of the Fall semester, Kalina Wińska: Atmospheric Gaze, curated by Megan Bissonette, and Elizabeth K. Porcel: Trees of Bone. Both artists engage with nature in their work. Wińska’s method is to visualize the climate crisis through weather data, and Porcel contemplates caregiving with her surreal mingling of painted flora and fauna. The artists will be present at a closing reception on Thursday, August 25. An artists' talk at 4:00pm will be followed by a reception from 5:00- 7:00pm.
Opening the Fall semester will be Cutting Through Mountains To Bring Water: The Sculptures of Liu Shiming. A reception on Thursday, September 29 coincides with Atlanta Art Week. Liu Shiming (1926 - 2010) was a member of Central Academy of Fine Art's first generation of Chinese sculptors. He grounded his work in a Chinese local context, developing a folk art style within the Chinese tradition through ancient modeling methods. In 2018, the Central Academy of Fine Arts established the Liu Shiming Sculpture Museum, which is dedicated to researching and investigating Liu’s artworks and their art historical meaning. The exhibition at the Welch School Gallery includes twenty-four sculptures in wood, bronze, and ceramic, all on loan from the Liu Shiming Foundation in New York City.
Wrapping up the semester is the Fall BFA , an annual exhibition by graduating Bachelor of Fine Arts students. The exhibit features their works in photography, sculpture, ceramics, textiles, painting, printmaking and drawing.
