This intensive is aimed and encouraged for vocational movers or performers who have some experience taking part in a physical practice of some kind. This could range from, but isn't limited to, dance, parkour, circus, martial arts, yoga, sports and practitioners of physical therapies.
*If you are not sure if your experience is appropriate, we encourage you to send us a message.
The proposed practice is an accumulation of their personal interpretations, and experiences gathered whilst navigating the world of movement, and takes inspiration from neuroscience, fighting, dancing, acrobatics, meditation, locomotion and partnering, to attempt to extract different ingredients from these forms and introduce both already established ideas and ongoing research into the subject cultivating a movement practice.
Kim & Winston are both members of the Ferus Animi // Terra Nova Collective, a group of cross-disciplinary craftspeople researching in the fields of human physiology and performance, through both an artistic and scientific lens.

About the workshop:
In this workshop we will be working on new and ongoing research into the themes of:

Microbatics & Improvisation
These themes will be split into segments, but remain related as we progress through the day

Microbatics
The 'Microbatic' practice stems from a necessity of developing an approach to the world of acrobatics in a sustainable and somewhat holistic manner. It is partially inspired by some earlier setbacks and injuries which suggested a different tonality to the general approach. This in turn required an adaptation and evolution for the working methodologies we will explore.
It forms one of the foundations of Winston’s practice and invites the practitioner to integrate the acrobatic language seamlessly into their physical vocabulary. Its about gaining more freedom and blurring the edges between what actually defines acrobatics.
The original question I held was “how can I move in whichever direction I would wish to? How can we physically decorate around the functionality of each form?
This is what we will attempt to find out, through athletic development, falling, groundwork, agility protocols and partnering all intertwined.

Integrating Fluidity
Through our interaction I wish to strip down movement to its essence
and to work towards your physical and mental goals regarding your practice.
We will address the essential roles of play and failure in growth
and try to encourage vulnerability in order to gain acceptance of
moving as oneself / yourself.

I'd like us to see movement through different lenses.
to dig into the practical and "dry" movements in order to add color, texture and create physical qualities as we please. I believe that there's strength in softness and a necessity of softness in our strength. Through our shared exploration we will attempt to figure this puzzle out together.
This part of the practice is attempting to refine the more subtle and granular layers of how we can move. It attempts to to reveal a link between different improvisational elements and ideas, it implies a space which is very open, and attempts at fostering an inclusive environment both in exchange and exploration.
Through this lens we can take a closer look at:
Where a movement begins and ends? How do we ingest and navigate something new or familiar? Why do we practice? How do we practice? Can we imagine a quality and become this quality?

About the teachers:

Kim Amankwaa -

Kim’s personal practice is informed by her education at the Amsterdam School for the Arts, her three years at company ICK, after which she started her freelance career. Working with companies and projects including Arno Schuitemaker, Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker's ROSAS, Alexander Vantournhout / NotStanding, Damien Jalet and Yoann Bourgeois.
Her interest in teaching has been growing alongside her wish to change some of the ways we look at learning. There's a specific culture within dance that doesn't always allow directed exploration to reach its potential and through teaching in a way that provides a safe space it can change the way we look at failure.

Winston began his movement practice researching acrobatic dance, a hybrid mix containing elements from gymnastics, capoeira, breakdancing and martial arts as well as undergoing several years of research around acrobatic contact partnering.
During his early practice he was mentored by Alexander Vantournhout who helped refine and develop his physical craft.
Alongside his development, he has an ongoing dialogue and study with Martin Kilvady, ferus.animi.terra.nova, and will be entering his second year as part of the human movement studies, led by Marcello Palozzo.
Artistically he is currently engaged with Yoann Bourgouis as performer and assistant choreographer.
