Weavers, Mediators: A Panel on Textile Materiality
Sat 28 Sep | 3.30pm | The Ngee Ann Kongsi Auditorium and Auditorium Foyer, City Hall Wing, Level B1, National Gallery Singapore | Free, registration required: https://bit.ly/weaversmediators

Explore the dimensional and gendered notions of weaving with Malaysian anthropologist Dr. Welyne Jeffrey Jehom, Māori weaver Karl Leonard and American-Palestinian historian Wafa Ghnaim.
From the intricacies of motif designs to methodologies and cultural revivals, the panel will discuss the plurality of feminisms and ancestral knowledges, critically analysing how such practices continue to transmit across generations. Beyond serving as decorative handwoven textiles, how do these materials mediate, and what do they reveal about the resilience and identities of the communities that made them?

About the Speakers
KARL RANGIKAWHITI LEONARD grew up in Rotorua and lives with his wife Ruiha and their four children. His depth and breadth of practice and knowledge of Māori Arts range from raranga (weaving), whatu and taniko (textile cloaks, finger weaving), piupiu and kahu piupiu (waist garments and garments around the shoulders), tukutuku (lattice work), whakairo (carving), through to contemporary forms. These art forms have been handed down from both his maternal and paternal lineage and the elder women of one of his local tribes.
WAFA GHNAIM is a Palestinian dress historian, researcher, author and educator who learned embroidery from her mother, award-winning artist Feryal Abbasi-Ghnaim. In 2017, she founded The Tatreez Institute (Tatreez & Tea), a global arts education initiative teaching Palestinian, Jordanian and Syrian embroidery techniques and dress history. Wafa is the Curator for the Museum of the Palestinian People in Washington, D.C., and a Senior Research Fellow for The Metropolitan Museum of Art in the Department of Ancient Near Eastern Art.
DR WELYNE J. JEHOM is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Anthropology and Sociology, and a member of the Bidayuh, an indigenous group from Sarawak, East Malaysia. Specializing in community development and engagement, she empowers Indigenous communities by facilitating skill and knowledge development for establishing community-based enterprises. In addition, she curates multi-sensory exhibitions that showcase the traditional craftsmanship of Pua Kumbu textiles on an international platform. Her dedication to conservation and sustainable development has earned her recognition, including the Merdeka Award Thumbs-Up Challenge in 2016 and the Best Practice of Community Project award for Sarawak Pua Kumbu Weaving in 2015 from the European Union's Sustainable and Solidarity Economy and RHSF. She headed the Center for Malaysian Indigenous Studies (CMIS) from 2017-2021.
