📣 Weardale Together Presents...
A Winter Wassail & Weard'Aley Celidh
What is a Weardale Wassail I hear you cry! Well, it is a joyful gathering where our community of all ages comes together to shake off those wintery blues, share hope for the new year, and celebrate the rich traditions of Wassailing! While Wassailing may not have deep roots in the dale, we are crafting a tradition of our own — inspired by the rich knowledge, skills, and creativity of the people who call Weardale home. Drawing from age-old customs across the country and blending them with local insights, we’re creating a unique celebration that reflects the heart of our community.
This magical evening is all about celebrating our unique community. You’ll sing, dance, eat, drink, and take part in rituals to chase away evil spirits to ensure a fruitful year ahead. From games and activities to lively songs and shared laughter, there’s something for everyone.
Last year’s event was unforgettable, with a spirited Mummers play by Drama in the Dale, lively tunes from Diddley Squat, superb food crafted by our talented chef Cheryl (from Root & Branch Community Café), and a chorus of voices raised in traditional Wassail songs led by The Gillows (Rebecca Beth Gillow).
This year, we’re bringing back much of what made it so magical — and adding even more! Local youth folk bands Wear’d Aliens and Cream Tees (Music at the Heart of Teesdale) will take the stage, reviving long-lost Weardale songs with fresh energy. To top it off, the fantastically extravagant DIY Ceilidh Band from Newcastle will lead us into an evening of non-stop ceilidh dancing. Get ready for a night filled with music, movement, and celebration!
🌿 So don your greenery, bring your voice, and join us for a night of revelry, warmth, and togetherness.
