Discussing, disagreeing, and determining our real thoughts about the evolving role of gender and sexuality in society can be scary—so scary that many people choose not to share their true beliefs for fear of being canceled or saying something politically incorrect.
In this talk, the speaker explores the differences between social justice and social change through the case study of the gender and sexual diversity movement, exploring how we can discuss gender and sexuality within a multi-religious and multicultural society (one that includes people you may not agree with!). The speaker argues that, by applying the conversational tools of ‘radical pluralism’, we can move the gender and sexuality debate—and our democracy at large—from division to dialogue, creating a more sustainable and less polarized society in the process.
In a world where we’ve conflated “being conservative” with hating trans people and “being NDP” with making sure trans kids live, the speaker will show you how to intentionally create spaces of disagreement, nuance, and courageous conversation—while still sustaining your relationships and uplifting marginalized communities regardless of political affiliation
