25th Anniversary Screening! 4K Restoration! As another Sad Girl Summer comes to a close, We Really Like Her! co-hosts Emily and Danita invite you to *come sail away* with them at a 25th anniversary screening of Sofia Coppola's eternally intoxicating The Virgin Suicides.
The start of the filmmaker's ongoing partnership with Kirsten Dunst, The Virgin Suicides uses a soft and feminine lens to take you through the true hell that is being a teenage girl. Coppola's feature directorial debut is based on Jeffrey Eugenides novel of the same name and follows five young girls (the Lisbon sisters, led by Dunst's lustful Lux) who are slowly suffocated by the scrutiny they face from from their conservative parents (Kathleen Turner and, unfortunately, James Woods), as well as their peers (see: Josh Harnett as stone fox/town stud Trip Fontaine).
Set in the '70s with a soundtrack that includes original music from Air as well as era-appropriate tracks from the likes of Heart and Styx, The Virgin Suicides is an ideal end-of-summer movie. It is, quite simply, the perfect mix of dreamy and devastating.
CONTENT WARNING: As its title suggests, this movie features illusions to, and on-screen depictions of, self-harm.
