About this Event
Where do poetry and film collide to make space for the mythic, the magic, the abstraction? How can poetry-film undermine the white gaze & its homogenising depiction of black masculinity on screen? What happens when you explore the poetics of collaboration/collective voice through artist moving image? How does my own, queer, feminist, black experience/voice meet those I'm working with? Poet and filmmaker Jess Murrain attempts to explore some of these questions in her debut poetry-film series 'WE KINGS' feat & in collaboration with Marv Fayose, Wisdom Iheoma, Prince Kundai, filmmaker/DOP Alexander Nicolaou & dancer Karteer.
Winners of the Out-Spoken Prize for Poetry 2023, Jess & Alex bring together a culmination of a two year long-project that focuses poetry experiments & cross-form work.
There will also be a live reading from award winning poet Gboyega Odubanjo (While I Yet Live, Aunty Uncle Poems). The event will finish with an artist Q&A.
(*This is a fundraising event in which a share of ticket proceeds will be donated to charities specialising in sexual violence training & prevention, & charities who specialise in supporting survivors of sexual violence. A 'donation' ticketing system is in place to support this; to raise money but also to accommodate concessions & those on low income. Suggestion for ticket donation: £5-£10).
