American trumpeter Randy Brecker and the WDR Big Band share a long and successful history. In the fall of 2003, we performed together with Randy’s brother Michael on tenor saxophone at the Leverkusen Jazz Festival. The program was titled “Some Skunk Funk,” after a track from the debut album of the “Brecker Brothers,” Randy and Michael’s influential fusion band. The subsequent CD release of “Some Skunk Funk” was a huge success and won a Grammy in 2007, shortly after Michael Brecker’s death. In 2012, Randy returned as a guest with the WDR Big Band, joining saxophonist Chris Potter to present a tribute to the era of hard bop.So when Randy Brecker now comes to North Rhine-Westphalia for two concerts with the WDR Big Band, he’ll be reuniting with old friends. And as is often the case with good friendships: you just need to catch up briefly and then pick up right where you left off at your last meeting—with inspiring live jazz at the highest musical level. Another guarantee of this is principal conductor Bob Mintzer, in charge of the arrangements and musical direction.

Den US-amerikanischen Trompeter Randy Brecker und die WDR Big Band verbindet eine lange und erfolgreiche Geschichte. Im Herbst 2003 traten sie gemeinsam mit Randys Bruder Michael am Tenorsaxofon bei den Leverkusener Jazztagen auf. Das Programm hieß "Some Skunk Funk", nach einem Stück aus dem Debütalbum der "Brecker Brothers", Randy und Michaels stilprägender Fusionband. Die spätere CD-Veröffentlichung von "Some Skunk Funk" war ein Riesenerfolg und wurde 2007, kurz nach dem Tod von Michael Brecker, mit einem Grammy ausgezeichnet. 2012 war Randy noch einmal zu Gast bei der WDR Big Band, gemeinsam mit Saxofonist Chris Potter präsentierte er eine Hommage an die Ära des Hard Bop.
Wenn Randy Brecker jetzt für zwei Konzerte mit der WDR Big Band nach Nordrhein-Westfalen kommt, trifft er also auf alte Bekannte. Und wie es mit guten Freundschaften häufig so ist: Man muss sich nur kurz auf den neuesten Stand bringen und kann dann dort anknüpfen, wo man bei der letzten Begegnung aufgehört hat: bei begeisterndem Live-Jazz auf höchstem musikalischen Niveau. Ein weiterer Garant dafür ist Chefdirigent Bob Mintzer, der die Arrangements und die musikalische Leitung übernimmt.
