Waypeople provides a sonic accompaniment to the Tao Te Ching, an ancient Chinese text of great philosophical and spiritual importance that has become a guide to people worldwide. This groundbreaking music captures the spirit and intent of Tao Te Ching, bringing the wisdom, humour and powerful spirituality of this remarkable text to life with a talented musical ensemble from Aotearoa, New Zealand. The music is written and directed by saxophonist/composer Jake Baxendale, with words from the celebrated author Ursula Le Guin’s English language version.
Sung by Chelsea Prastiti, carried by the rhythm section of Daniel Hayles (piano) Johnny Lawrence (bass) and Cory Champion (drums), and tethered to ancient beginnings by the guzheng (Chinese string instrument) of renowned performer Jia Ling, Waypeople is an experience that will resonate with listeners long after the final notes sound.
“It is rooted in jazz sensibilities, but it is more than that. It is in parts, free, mainstream, and ancient; where the echoes from Chinese antiquity are skillfully balanced against western melodic and harmonic structures … an entity complete unto itself.” John Fenton -Jazz Journalists Association, International Jazz Competition Judge
Waypeople was originally commissioned by Wellington Jazz Festival.
