Students discover what sound is by investigating vibrations, frequency, resonance, and interference, then learn how different waveforms (sine, square, sawtooth and more) shape the way we hear the world. They’ll experiment with analog synthesizers, a theremin and other analog and electronic instruments, visualize sound on oscilloscopes, explore the math behind musical scales, and sample real-world audio to analyze its structure.Using our entertainment laser and tools like Radiator and Modulaser, campers will also see how the same signals that create sound can generate moving patterns of light. Students will be encouraged to create their own performances with sound and light for display in a weekend student showcase - a unique blend of physics, creativity, and technology.
No prior music or coding experience required. Just curiosity and a love of sound!
What they'll DO
Use oscilloscopes to see sound waves (electrical signals) in real time
Connect and experiment with synthesizers, microphones, and a theremin to explore how signals change
Manipulate waveforms using a ‘laser synthesizer’ (physical and software) and immediately observe the results on screens and lasers
Experiment hands-on with frequency, amplitude, modulation, and interference
What SKILLS they will LEARN
How sound and electronic signals are represented as waveforms
How to read and use an oscilloscope
Core concepts of frequency, amplitude, phase, and modulation
How signals can be combined to create new waveforms/sounds/patterns
Translating abstract math and physics concepts into observable behavior

What they will CREATE
Custom sound waveforms, their own music if they want
Visualized signal patterns projected in real time
A final interactive sound-and-light demonstration combining audio, electronics, and lasers
Class Format
Our camps are divided into blocks with breaks. We focus learning in the morning while everyone is fresh and encourage experimentation and project work in the afternoon.
There are breaks mid morning and mid afternoon as well as lunch.
