Description

Join us for Water’s Witness, a low tide journey through Deptford Creek—where local ecologies and urban histories converge to inform one of London’s most biodiverse ecosystems. Guided by an expert from Creekside Discovery Centre, this free two-hour walk explores the Creek as a dynamic interface, shaped by constant negotiations between nature and industry, water and land, harmony and precarity.

As we walk along the Creek’s edge, we’ll examine how water informs and affects all life along its banks, offering situated perspectives on climate resilience and flood preparedness, whilst reflecting on how this local landscape mirrors global environmental changes. Immersed in the Creek and its complexities, we will act as witnesses to its current conditions and its possible futures.

Following the walk, participants are invited to a tour of the exhibition Joining Doggerland, led by its curator Shannon Best. Held at APT Gallery — a short walk from Creekside Discovery Centre — this mixed-media group exhibition reflects on the predicted flooding set to impact the Fenlands, East Anglia, coastal Britain, and low-lying areas of London in the next five years. Through works exploring the dialogue between the land and sea, the human and non-human, death, life, and deep time, Joining Doggerland contemplates the profound interconnections shaping our changing world.

Key Details

Walking Tour: The tour with Creekside Discovery Centre runs from 2-4pm. Please arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled start time to allow for preparation to enter the river. Waders and mud sticks are provided. Only children aged 8 and above can join the Low Tide Walk activity. Due to the terrain of the Creek, this event is not wheelchair friendly. For other access requirements, please email [email protected], and we will make accommodations where possible.

Exhibition Tour: Led by Shannon Best, the tour runs from 4-4:30pm. Refreshments will be provided at APT Gallery. The Gallery is wheelchair accessible

About the Organisers

Creekside Discovery Centre is a charity located alongside Deptford Creek, a small offshoot of the River Thames. Committed to safeguarding the Creek’s unique ecologies, its staff lead hands-on environmental education activities to connect local communities with the Creek’s habitats and collaborate with conservationists, planners, and building professionals to promote sustainable land management practices during urban regeneration projects.

Shannon Best is an emerging curator and MFA Curating student at Goldsmiths, University of London. Their work explores the intersections of ecology, history, and contemporary creative practice, with an impetus on the tangible presence of the past in shaping present and future conditions.
