Darren O'Donnell, Artistic Director of Mammalian Diving Reflex, will present the thinking behind his company's work, specifically sharing insights from the science of dynamic complex systems, how they relate to social change, and what performance, in particular, can do in the world. He will present a few examples from the company's body of work, including the company's most exciting project: The SMYLE (the Succession Model of Youth Labour Engagement). Mammalian has been working with the same children since 2006 who, now in their mid-twenties, are taking over the company and assuming leadership roles, the approach relying on Pierre Bourdieu's use of the concept of habitus, or 'feel for the game'. The SMYLE is a convincing demonstration that there is a new role for cultural institutions to play, making good on the putative African proverb that it takes a village to raise a child.
