Layers, choreographed by Katarzyna Żeglicka and Alicja Czyczel, explores care and attentiveness in the spirit of radical imagination. On stage, the audience encounters practices of hope and emancipation from oppressive norms. The images presented promote bodily diversity, artistic plurality, and accessibility in the arts. The performance speculates on scenarios of care grounded in radical imagination, envisioning anti-capitalist and anti-patriarchal realities.
According to Alexa Khasnabish and Max Haiven, radical imagination draws on the past and on the herstories/histories and experiences of others, forming the basis for solidarity and struggles against oppression. It is the capacity to imagine the world and life as they could be. Layers takes inspiration from the lives of the characters in Cristina Morales’s novel Easy Reading, as well as from the life of Frida Kahlo. Beyond their experiences of disability and so-called “weakness,” these figures are united by their resistance to the existing reality.
During the creative process, the “weakness” and anarchic attitudes of the characters from Easy Reading, together with the ideas of care and attentiveness, led the performers to develop a choreographic practice closely connected to their own sensitivities. Their understanding of anarchy is closer to Sarah Ruddick’s ethics of care than to revolutionary upheaval. In Maternal Thinking, Ruddick describes love, care, support, and growth as forms of so-called maternal practices that can become a new model for civic relations, fostering positive socio-political change by overcoming systems based on competition, domination, and violence.
The performance takes the form of a relaxed performance. The audience is invited to freely explore the auditorium and stage, to remain attentive to their bodies and personal needs—sitting, lying down, or standing—and to move beyond normative modes of perception. In keeping with this approach, the audience is not required to remain silent during the performance. Accessibility for people with diverse needs is an integral element of the work and a key aspect of radical imagination.
Layers is an international co-production; was selected for the Europe Beyond Access programme as a promising premiere that opens space for inclusive forms of creative expression.
The artists’ dreams of a multilayered world in which there is room for all beings play a central role in the creative process. Żeglicka and Czyczel explore the transformative potential of imagination. By combining their herstories, queer feminisms, and embodied practices, they create a stage narrative composed of dreams of an anarchist world.
An essential aspect of their artistic work is cultivating a relationship with the audience and inviting them into a shared practice of radical imagination. In an era of global polycrises—ecological, political, economic, and military—this practice takes on a restorative and emancipatory dimension. The sensibilities and meanings embedded in the performance respond to the urgent need to build a reality based on anarchy understood not as chaos, but as care, community, and love.

Katarzyna Żeglicka (they, their) - I am a queer and crip performer, dancer and choreographer; theatre educator and culture animator; a burnt-out activist. My art is "the art of resistance" and "activism through dance". I was a participant in the Winter Artist Exchange Ponderosa residency (Germany, 2020), the Residents in Residence program at the Zamek Culture Center (Poznań, 2022) and "Szczeliny. Women in the Performing Arts" (Grotowski Institute, 2023), scholarship holder of the Krakow programme "Resilient Culture" (2020) and the Creative Scholarship of the City of Krakow (2022). I made my debut as a performer in the performance Agitation (2015) choreographed by Zofia Noworól. My first original solo - Resonance of Contrast (2019) - was created as an etude ending a year-long Stage Choreography Course. The work was awarded in the "Europe Beyond Access" competition (British Council, Zachęta – National Gallery of Art, 2021). I collaborated with Rafał Urbacki on the research and choreographic project Experiments on People (Katowice, 2017). I used this experience in the production of the play "Rafał Urbacki: Solo" (Komuna Warszawa, 2019), which I co-created with Anu Czerwiński, Kacper Lipiński, Magdalena Przybysz, Igor Stokfiszewski, Weronika Szczawińska, Jaśmina Wójcik, Jakub Wróblewski. I performed in the play "PokaZ" by Justyna Wielgus and "Holy names of our Dybbuk" by Julie Weitz and choreographer Magdalena Przybysz. Together with Antek Kurjata, we are the creators and performers of the spectacle "Gra w Kontra-s-Ty" (Zamek Culture Centre, Poznań, 2022). My next original performances are "Wildgrown" (Cricoteka, 2023) and "Set-Up in Glitter" (The Grotowski Institute, 2023).
Alicja Czyczel - Alicja Czyczel (she/they) is a choreographer, educator and performer working at the intersection of choreography, activism, ecosomatics and experimental education. Her practice is based on queer-feminist methodologies and the creation of safer and braver spaces for movement, (un)learning and pleasure. They hold Master of Arts in choreography at ICI-CCN Montpellier (2019) and cultural studies at MISH at the University of Warsaw (2015). She is the co-founder of the Common Space collective and community. Czyczel creates stage choreographies ("Sensing" 2022, "LAGMA" 2020), conducts artistic research (“Care Collectives” 2021), workshops for children and adults, and guides sound walks (“Fluid Ground” 2023). As a performer, they collaborated with Ania Nowak, Joanna Piotrowska and Vincent Dupont. As a choreographer in the drama theatre she co-created “The Hearing Trumpet” (2023) directed by Weronika Szczawińska and “Antigone in Molenbeek” (2024) directed by Anna Smolar. As dramaturgy consultant she supported the creation of “The Sculptresses” (2023) by Sisterhood Practice (Aerowaves #Twenty24). As choreography and voice consultant she worked with Deaf artist Daniel Kotowski on his performance “Scenography of Voices” (2024).
Alicja Czyczel was scholarship holder of Young Poland 2018 from the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, Alternative Dance Academy 2018 from Art Stations Foundation, danceWEB 2019, Culture on the Web 2020, Warsaw City Artistic Scholarship 2021.

The rebels do not agree with the rules of the world. In the performance, Katarzyna Żeglicka and Alicja Czyczel show that they are against injustice in the world.
There is no single story in the performance. The performance is made of many parts. Each part tells a different story. You can understand the performance in your own way.
