Wang Yangming and His Ethical Philosophy (王陽明及其倫理哲學)

Wang Yangming 王陽明 (1472–1529) was one of the most important Confucian scholar-officials of the Ming dynasty. He not only demonstrated exceptional ability as a military commander and government official but was also one of the most original thinkers and influential teachers of his or any age. This talk offers a brief sketch of Wang Yangming's life and an introduction to some of his most important philosophical ideas and their implications for contemporary life.

Speaker

艾文賀 is an internationally renowned scholar of East Asian philosophy, ethics and religion. He is currently Professor and Chair of the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Georgetown University. Before Georgetown, Professor Ivanhoe served in the US Marine Corps and the US Army and then went to Stanford for a Ph.D. in religious studies and Asian languages. After having taught in both the Philosophy Department and the Religious Studies Department at Stanford, He moved to teach at a number of prestigious universities, including the University of Michigan, Boston University, the City University of Hong Kong and then at Sungkyunkwan University in Korea as a Distinguished Chair Professor in the College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy. Among his numerous publications are, Oneness: East Asian Conceptions of Virtue, Happiness, and How We Are All Connected (Oxford Univ Press, 2017); Ethics in the Confucian Tradition: The Thought of Mengzi and Wang Yangming (Hackett, 2002), and Confucian Reflections: Ancient Wisdom for Modern Times (Routledge, 2013). He has also translated a number of classical works of Chinese philosophy, including the Daodejing, Zhu Xi, Lu-Wang school of Neo-Confucianism, Sunzi, Mengzi, etc.

Moderator

The event will be moderated by GW Associate Professor of History and International Affairs 許臨君. Prof. Schluessel is a social historian of China and Central Asia, and his work focuses on Xinjiang (East Turkestan) in the 19th and 20th centuries.Prof. Schluessel is the Director of Sigur Center for Asian Studies and also serves as a faculty committee member for the Chinese Arts & Humanities Initiative at GW.
