Wanda Payne: Becoming Un-Mormon

Local author Wanda Payne shares her new memoir about her separation from the Mormon Church in which she was raised.

ABOUT THE BOOK

My publisher wanted me to write the synopsis in the third person. However, this is my story—my words and my conversation with you, the reader.
This is my journey of radical authenticity. Once I was someone who strictly obeyed all the rules and regulations of the Mormon Church. Now I'm living an authentic life as an excommunicated lesbian and have given myself permission to be my true self.
That permission to think differently has made all the difference. I was able to navigate my way out of the Church with no shame or religious trauma. If I had known that my personal beliefs held the key to releasing the distress of becoming excommunicated, it would have alleviated a lot of my struggle.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Wanda was born and raised in Mesa, Arizona. She spent the majority of her career in the world of accounting and tax preparation. In her work, everything always balanced: black and white, debits and credits. But internally, she has always considered herself a healer, someone who seeks to help others find solace and comfort. An astrologer once told Wanda that she was an interesting combination of logic and feeling. When she decided to retire from much of her tax and accounting practice in 2024, it was time to write her stories.
