Walworth’s History Through Song 2024. Book early for a free musical event. Sing-along at the end.
About this Event

An hour of entertainment, piano and songs composed in and about Walworth through the ages, sung by four local residents in the newly re-opened community room at the Old Walworth Town Hall.

The Walworth Society have uncovered songs sung in North Walworth at the Newington Butts Theatre (C16th), the Elephant & Castle Theatre and the Browning Hall (C18th & C19th). Even Walworth’s local genius inventor, Charles Babbage (1791 – 1871) will make an appearance with his irate views about music! And the audience will definitely be asked to sing-a-long, as we head to the Music Hall to meet a local Hippopotamus, a song by Donald Swann (1923-1994).

From the mid C20th we offer a tribute to Fred Bason (1907-1973), local council tenant, bookseller, renowned autograph hunter, diarist, author and TV presenter who also played the piano in nearby theatres.

Tyrone Landau, pianist, will accompany Olivia Penhallow from People’s Company, Matt Meynell of the Walworth Community Pub Project and local performer Rawlene Evelyn. Walworth Society researchers, Diana Cochrane and Neil Crossfield, will provide the historical context and images as part of the Walworth Untold Stories Project with drama added by Tyrone on the piano.

Please book early on Eventbrite. The event is advertised as ‘free’. However, if you would like to donate towards the costs of hosting this event, please do so at the event.

Come early for a free cuppa. Doors open 5.30pm. We will be finished before 7.30pm to get ready for a second performance at 8pm.
