“It Is,” the fourth album by Wall of Ears, manifests the music of letting go and embracing the void. Lott entered the studio with Mike Byrne, Travis Gore, and Tyler Fiala for a spontaneous, meditation-infused session, but the musical style thumps and whizzes far beyond yoga studio ambiance. They attempted to leave their minds’ cravings for rehearsed perfection at the door, and to explore where, for them, rock and IT coalesce. If meditation reconnects its practitioners to the non-dual, the inherent connectivity of all beings (“We are one equals one,” Lott sings on “Eureka”), then “It Is” reveals the band inside a synchronous moment. Here, they shed premeditated structure entirely and let communal playfulness guide the shuffle of “The Conveyor,” the string bath in “Let It In” and the impish “Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah”’s that punctuate “Eureka.”
In the jacket notes for Willem A. Nyland’s 1978 album, “Improvisations,” an inspiration to Lott, Nyland says, “…this music, simple as it is, comes from the heart, and it will reach you in your heart. It’s not necessary to have it go through your mind at all. Your mind would do damage to it. Just listen to it the way it is, as it is, for whatever it is.”
What if pop music didn’t intend for infinite play? Desiring repeatable joy from a pop song is to overshoot, to want a perfect chorus to last forever, to cling until it’s spread thinly across grocery store speakers and reunion tours and high school memories, misses the mark. Maybe you only experience this album once, but Wall of Ears has created a composition joyous enough to echo long after its initial spin.
