About this Event
Photo: Samuel Johnson by Percy Fitzgerald (detail), St Clement Danes - © David Charnick 2022
In 1737 a teacher with an uncertain future arrived in London in the company of one of his former pupils. The former pupil was David Garrick, who would become one of the most important of English actors.
The teacher was Samuel Johnson, destined to become one of the greatest exponents of the English language.
This tour celebrates moments in Johnson's life and his circle of friends. It features site-specific readings from Johnson's writings, as well as excerpts from James Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnon.
Meet me outside the exit from Covent Garden Underground Station on James Street. We finish at Dr Johnson's House on Gough Square, a short walk from Chancery Lane Underground Station, City Thameslink and Blackfriars Station.
