A walk around the Clapton area of Hackney, taking in Springfield Park, the River Lea , the Middlesex Filter Beds and Clapton Pond
About this Event

Upper and Lower Clapton are a residential area of Hackney by the River Lea. This walk takes in the delightful Springfield Park, once home to a mansion house before following along the River Lea where once stood timber yards that serviced the furniture making industry. After passing the locks which divide the Lea into Canal and River - we'll visit the Middlesex Filter Beds - the remains of a Victorian water works which are now hidden away beneath a nature reserve. Finally we will climb the hill to Clapton Pond and hear how John Hugh Smyth-Piggot was challenged to walk across it.

The walk is about 3.5 miles and on paths and pavements.
