About this Event
The Walking Southern Roads to Freedom is a multi-day walking event in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas that retraces the historic, lesser-known routes of the Underground Railroad to Mexico. The 2nd Annual event was held from February 27 to March 1, 2026, covering approximately 24 miles over three days and ending with a crossing into Reynosa, Mexico, to honor the path taken by enslaved people seeking freedom in the 1830s.
This year a group of UTRGV students documented the walk as part of their Television Production course and will present their work at the ENTRE Film Center along with members of the Walking Southern Roads to Freedom group who took part in the walk.
After the screening, the audience is invited to attend an exhibit at nearby Castro Gallery (602 W. Harrison Ave., Harlingen, Texas 78550) where a separate group of UTRGV painting students will display artworks that reflect on their experiences living in the Rio Grande Valley.
