This year during Holy Week at Jordan UCC, we are offering a new and powerful way to enter into the holy remembrance together. On Good Friday at Noon, we will gather on the Portico and begin a solemn procession with a large, heavy, wooden cross, lovingly constructed by Richard Snyder. This is not a symbolic prop. It is substantial. It will require several people to bear its weight — just as it took more than one set of shoulders to carry the grief, sin, and sorrow of the world on that first Good Friday.
From the Portico, we will take turns to accompany and carry the cross toward the open area between Church Road and Route 309, near our lighted sign. Along the way, we will pause for Scripture readings as Stations of the Cross, allowing the Word to shape our steps and silence to deepen our prayer.
When we arrive, we will lift the center cross into place between two crosses that were erected earlier in the week. There, in that visible and public space, we will drape the center cross in black cloth, sing “Were You There,” and share Holy Communion — remembering that even at the foot of the cross, grace is offered and love is not defeated.
“Surely he has borne our infirmities and carried our diseases… and by his bruises we are healed” (Isaiah 53:4–5). On Good Friday, we will not rush past that truth. We will stand beneath it.
This service will be offered here for the first time, and we pray it becomes a sacred part of our shared story. We hope you will join us for this moving and meaningful act of witness and worship as we walk together through the heaviness of the cross — trusting that Easter morning is coming.
