On April 21, Virginians will vote on a proposed constitutional amendment that would take redistricting power away from the independent commission you already voted for—and hand it back to politicians in Richmond. I'm urging you to vote NO.This event is an information-sharing hub where you can learn about the amendment, ask questions, and share resources with fellow Virginians before Election Day.
WHY VOTE NO?
In 2020, Virginia voters approved a constitutional amendment creating an independent redistricting commission to take map-drawing out of the hands of self-interested legislators.
Now, Democratic politicians want to suspend that commission and draw the maps themselves. Their justification? They claim President Trump is encouraging Republican-led states to redraw congressional districts, so Virginia Democrats need to strike first to "protect" the Commonwealth.
Don't be fooled. Here's what's really happening:
• Virginia Democrats are using Trump as an excuse to do the exact thing they claim to oppose—letting partisan politicians draw maps for political advantage.
• They're asking you to abandon the principle of independent redistricting because other states might draw partisan maps. That's not protection. That's participation.
• "We have to gerrymander because they might gerrymander" is not a defense of fair maps. It's a race to the bottom.
• Virginians voted to take redistricting out of politicians' hands. We didn't add an exception for when one party feels threatened by the other party's tactics in other states.
• If the answer to partisan redistricting elsewhere is partisan redistricting here, then what was the point of creating an independent commission at all?
The independent commission exists precisely for moments like this—to draw maps based on data and law, not political panic.
