About this Event

Volunteer Session - Efford Marsh Bracken Brusing

Led by one of our National Trust rangers, we will be controlling the Bracken by bashing/injuring it.

~ WHY? ~
Bracken ferns can form dense monocultures, crowding out other plant species and reducing overall biodiversity in an area. By controlling bracken, the aim is to restore a more diverse range of plant species, which can support a greater variety of wildlife.

~ HOW? ~
Using a strong stick, we can adequately bruise the base of the bracken stem, causing the plant to bend over. This action prompts the rhizome to release sap continuously, consequently diminishing the plant's strength. As a result, the growth of bracken the following year is notably less robust, enabling other flora to compete more effectively.

Please note that this is weather dependent - if it is extreme wind or rain we will reschedule.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join some of the Plymouth Natural Grid team and find out more about the work that we do. If you are interested in joining us on a regular basis, there will be an opportunity to register at the end of the session as a Plymouth Natural Grid Volunteer!

This session is suitable for all those (18+) interested in nature and the outdoors, whether you want to meet other like-minded people or are looking to learn more about it.
