About this Event

WHAT / WHY / WHO?
The weekends bookending Earth Day are beautiful times to show up for land that helps people breathe easier, think more clearly, and feel more at home outdoors. This Team Naturespace volunteer day focuses on three kinds of care at Clement Waters Retreat: removing streamswept litter from Fox Hollow Creek, gathering windswept litter along the roadside edges of the property, and pulling small honeysuckle upstarts from the cleared forest trail.

This is a satisfying workday for people who enjoy visible progress and the good feeling that comes from improving a shared outdoor treasure with their own hands. Volunteers will help strengthen a forest setting used for walking, reflection, and nature-based wellness experiences.

WEAR / BRING / GET
Wear closed-toe shoes with strong tread and sturdy clothing you can move in easily. Morning air may feel cool, and the work warms up quickly, so light layers are a great choice. Long pants are helpful for brush work. Bring work gloves if you have a favorite pair, along with water, and anything that helps you stay comfortable outdoors. We will have tools, extra gloves, and filtered water available.

PROJECT DETAILS
Our work will move through a few different parts of the property based on conditions and volunteer energy.

In and around Fox Hollow Creek, we will gather litter carried in by moving water and help lift visible debris from the creek edges. Along bordering roadsides, we will remove trash that has blown in and settled in the bushes. On the walking trail, we will pull young honeysuckle shoots that are beginning to re-enter the cleared path.

Our honeysuckle removal practice supports a forest that also serves educational and foraging purposes. The 'Root Docking' method is done by hand and with care for the living system as a whole, without potentially food-toxic herbicides. This volunteer day is about helping the land stay welcoming, walkable, and easier to steward through the seasons ahead.

We also welcome your ideas for future easy volunteer projects that would help make the forest safer, healthier, and easier for visitors to enjoy. If you notice a maintenance need, a safety opportunity, or a practical next-step project for volunteers, please share it at the end of our volunteer session. Team Naturespace grows stronger through shared hands, shared eyes, and shared responsibility.

PERKS
Volunteering here often leaves people with a sense of completion, as the work is physical, the setting is alive, and the results are easy to see. Beyond that, you will be volunteering in a nature therapy space. Many volunteers share that they end the day with the serene Blue River Greenway's gift of inner calm. You can expect to leave with lighter shoulders, a clearer mind, and the grounded satisfaction of knowing you helped care for a place that will keep caring for others.

BACKGROUND
Clement Waters Retreat at Gregory Ridge is a four-acre urban forest restoration site in Kansas City. Over the years, volunteers have helped clear trails, remove dumped waste, reduce invasive growth, and strengthen access to a forest space held for health, reflection, and shared public benefit. Team Naturespace continues that work through stewardship that supports ecological health, safe trails and groves, and a stronger sense of shared care for land in an area of Kansas City shaped by long-term disinvestment.

BOTTOM LINE
Join us for a volunteer session that turns your care for Mother Earth into action. You will help restore a forest path, protect a creek corridor, and strengthen a place where people can come to naturally restore their calm, connection, and vitality.

HOW TO FIND US
Parking is easiest along Myrtle Avenue just south of East Gregory Boulevard. From there, walk to the driveway at the southeast corner of Myrtle and Gregory and enter through the red cattle gate.
