April 17th-19th, the Icelandic Sports Association for the Disabled (ÍF) in collaboration with the Icelandic Volleyball Association (BLÍ), will host a three day workshop on inclusive volleyball. The aim of the workshop is to strengthen the knowledge and skills of coaches and anyone interested. The workshop is open to everyone and no prior volleyball experience is required. The workshop will place special emphasis on sitting volleyball and unified volleyball as ways to increase participation and diversity within the sport. Participants will gain both theoretical knowledge and practical experience in adapting training sessions and organizing practices for a diverse group of athletes, with the goal of applying this knowledge directly in their own environment.
The workshop will also explore how to build and develop sports programs from the ground up, particularly in the context of youth development and the realities of small nations. Participants will be introduced to practical tools for starting programs, increasing participation and creating positive engaging environments, as well as how to establish clear structures and build sustainable systems within clubs.
The workshop will be led by John Kessel, who has worked as a coach and is currently an instructor for organizations such as FIVB, USA Volleyball NORCECA, World ParaVolley, and Special Olympics. He brings extensive experience in coaching and development at the international level.
Participants will take part in practical sessions, group work, and discussions. At the end of the workshop, all participants will receive a certificate confirming their participation and that they have gained a foundation to begin coaching sitting volleyball and unified volleyball in Iceland, along with both theoretical and practical knowledge related to youth development in sports.
